Did you Hear That?

My husband, Phillip, writes for the conference devotional from time to time. This is his latest that I wanted to share. Enjoy!

Has God ever spoke to you? Now I know that we have all had conversations with God and sometimes those prayers are answered but I’m talking about really hearing God’s voice. Was it that still small voice? How about from a fire like Moses?

I have heard his voice once, in true physical form. In the fall of 2013, I was blessed with the opportunity to attend an experience called the “Walk to Emmaus” with the Sonrise Emmaus community in Kingsport, TN. Now I won’t get into any real specifics of a walk but I can say I highly recommend this experience to anyone and everyone, and no you aren’t physically doing a lot of walking. Anyway, leading up to this 3 day experience I had made up my mind that I wanted God to show himself to me. It could be me seeing him or him speaking to me. During our prayer times during the walk I would pray “Lord, let me see you or let me hear you. I am here, show me that you are.” It was on the final day in one of the last sessions it happened. We were in the chapel of the church and one of the leaders was reading scripture from John, and I hear “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:9). Let me stop for a minute and say hi, my name is Phillip. Now at this point my jaw hit the ground. Clear as a bell when I thought it would not happen God called me out in front of 20 other men and said “Hey Phillip, Ive been here the whole time, you just haven’t been listening.” It was a a moment that I will never forget.

George Strait recorded a song called “I Saw God Today”. It talks to several daily occurrence that we often overlook or take for granted but that he is able to see God in. The chorus goes:
“I've been to church I've read the book
I know He's here
But I don't look
Near as often as I should
Yeah I know I should
His fingerprints are everywhere
I just look down and stop and stare Open my eyes and then I swear I Saw God Today

This song had a whole new meaning to me after God opened my eyes.
I think too often we are too concerned with what we want or we’re doing so much talking that we don’t hear what God is telling us. Like children we are telling God what he needs to do or what we want him to do and we don’t hear his response or what he wants from us. Or we get so busy trying to see what God is trying to do with our lives that we don’t see what he has already doing. We can’t see the forest because of the trees.
Lord, thank you for opening my eyes and ears and allowing me to notice things that I had previously overlooked or took for granted. Lord, teaches us to talk less and listen more. Let us remember that our actions should be for your will not ours. Amen!
