Star Words
January 5, 2021, 11:02 AM

Good News! It is time for communion to start off the New Year of 2021. FCUMC invites you to join us live, by video or in person (if we are able to meet), for Holy Communion on January 10 in both Traditional and The Journey Worship Services. You can pick up your communion elements from the church on Wednesday, January 6 from 5:30-7:30pm (hosted by the Youth) or Thursday, January 7 from 10am-noon (hosted by Fountain Kids). With your communion elements, you will receive a little surprise and a star word!

What is a star word? It is a gift written on a star to help us celebrate Epiphany, when the wise men who traveled great distances to offer their gifts to the newborn Christ-child were following a star. They received God’s gift, then offered their gifts to God. We offer a star word to commemorate the arrival of the wise men and their offerings. As we commemorate the arrival of the wise men and remember their offerings, we delight in the opportunity to support our community and receive a word.

Fountain Kids is hosting a canned food drive for Fountain City Ministry Center on January 6 & 7. You can drop off your donations as you pick up your communion elements and the gift of a star word at Door 5 on Fountain Road. Details on the food drive can be found in the Fountain Kids section of this newsletter.

Everyone who receives a star gift is encouraged to take it home and hang it up where you are sure to see it every day. It may be on your bathroom mirror or next to your computer screen. I encourage you to look up the definition of your word and then look up scriptures that relate to it and use those throughout the year as stars to guide your quiet time with God.

1. Luke 2:8 - Shepherds are watching the sheep by night.                                                     Sometimes we feel as if we are in the dark but God is present and guides us with his direction like he did the shepherds. Maybe your star word is a word of direction and discernment.

2. Matthew 2:1-2 - The wisemen see the star and travel to pay homage to the Christ child. During this new year, how can we pay homage to the Christ child with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness? Maybe your star word is a confirmation of how you pay homage to Jesus or how you should pay homage this year.

3. Matthew 2:9-10 - The wisemen were overwhelmed with Joy upon seeing the Emmanuel (God with us). Maybe your star word is a way to see Joy in the renewing strength that God is with us in good times and in bad.

4. Luke 2:19 - Mary pondered these things in her heart. Maybe we should ponder these words in our hearts and let them guide us as we seek to be disciples of Christ.

My star word last year was “contentment”. When I received it, I was offended, seriously I am content. Wait, let me ponder this. I am always on the move, always waiting for the next mountain or valley, preparing and planning. Well, okay, maybe I am not content. So, I began a long journey of seeking to be content in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in 2020, even in the midst of all the changes and adaptions. I will take a new star word and see what it is but I will also keep my old one as I continue to ponder these things and seek to be a disciple of Jesus. May your star word guide you, renew you, strengthen you, change you, affirm you, and sustain you in 2021.

God Bless, Pastor Kristen
